Through a Christian employer
By Donacel Macurubbo Turingan
I am one of the Filipinos who left her country to work as a domestic helper in a foreign land, Singapore. At that time I did not take my religion seriously and did not know about the need to receive Jesus Christ as my personal Saviour and Lord.
In 2014, I came back to Singapore to work for a new employer, after having left my first employer three years earlier to return home. I am so grateful for the Lord’s providence that I can work for a compassionate Christian family. The members of this family are all faithful and sincere Christians and I am very happy to work for them. I can see the love of our Lord Jesus Christ in their lives which overflows to a stranger like me. My heart is greatly touched by their concern for me.
On the first Sunday of my starting work with the family, my employer brought me to The ‘Fisherman of Christ’ Fellowship to attend Sunday school and worship service. When I stepped into the church, I was a little shocked to see that there was nothing on the walls and there was no statues and pictures in the hall. When the worship service started, it began with a prayer followed by the singing of hymns. The worship leader extended his warm welcome to all newcomers and invited them for lunch at the visitors’ corner so that we could come to know more about the church.
Since then I have been attending this church every Sunday with my employer and her family. From the weekly Sunday school class, I came to realise that I am a sinner, separated from God and living my own life. I understood that Jesus Christ was crucified on the cross for my sins and that He gave His sinless life to save me. It was during one Sunday school hour, when the Gospel of salvation was shared with me that I received the Lord Jesus Christ as my personal Saviour. After doing this I felt the burden of my sins lifted from me and my heart was flooded with unexplained joy. I know that God has forgiven me and given me eternal life as promised in the Bible. As a child of God, I have the assurance that one day God will take me home to be with Him and to enjoy all the promises that He has given to those who belong to Him.
I went through water baptism in November 2015. I realise that one day I will have to return to the Philippines to face all my unbelieving friends, relatives and family members. It is my prayer that my faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ will always be in my heart and that I will have the strength to make a stand for my faith before them. I pray that my faith will continue to give me courage and wisdom, not only in Singapore along with members of my church, but also wherever God may send me in future. I pray also that my husband and eight- year-old son in the Philippines will one day come to know God and enjoy all the spiritual blessings that I have.
