OF LIFE AND DEATH

In the last two months from Sept. to Oct. we went through several birthday celebrations, reunions and alas, funerals.  So amid joyful fellowship, we also experienced the sadness of farewell. With the deaths of Tek’s dear medical school classmate from Hongkong, his beloved sister in Sydney, a longtime friend in Melaka and Goldie’s aunt in New York we have been talking freely about deaths and funerals. It is not the morbid aspect but about celebrating life, leaving a legacy and preparing for departure and above all the hope of resurrection with Jesus. Thus we have an interesting collection of testimonies of how the sting of death is removed when the dying are ministered to by people who touch their lives and meet their need at the departure gate before they go on their last journey.

In our 17 days in Malaysia we had many touching encounters of seeing ordinary people who are helping to alleviate the suffering and needy at their doorstep. Herewith are stories of how different individuals did what they could, resulting in blessings for the disadvantaged and blessings for themselves. They are Meeting Needs and Touching Lives.

We interviewed Danny Chiew  who ten years ago , then a lay person, started to  reach out to the Nepalese mostly factory workers in Melaka and got his church Wesley Methodist involved to go on mission trips to visit the returnees. Read moreDanny’s 5th Missionary Journey

We met Lamtarida a village wife and mother from Indonesia who was discipled to be Jesus’ ambassador after she went to Melaka for cancer treatment and was ministered to by the folks at Gateway Bahasa Church. Read morePatients get more than Medical Treatment

Malaysia has many refugees from different countries. We met two Pakistani Christian families who are stuck in Melaka due to bureaucratic government prejudice against Christians.  Not allowed to work or go to school, they are a neglected, forgotten group which several churches are helping in hospitality, finances, education, etc. We in Australia can sponsor them which will shorten the re-settlement process We may not have clout to organize large-scale help but maybe we can help One by One

Preparing to go

Not many people plan their own funerals. I share how I helped a friend to plan her funeral service in  Well-planned Departure. The idea of having a funeral while still alive is even more unusual. We think it is a good idea but what shall we call it:  Living Funeral or Celebration of Life?   Also, what about writing your own epitaph? Read more…. The Epitaph.

I also chose my epitaph long ago but I won’t be needing it. Read more Choosing my epitaph.
